The Wild Coast Ruling Is Bigger Than Shell: South Africa's Choice Between Oil and Its Ocean

South Africa's Constitutional Court has drawn a line in the water.

On 14 August, the country's highest court set aside the exploration rights held by Shell and its local partner Impact Africa, blocking their plans to explore for oil and gas along the Wild Coast.

The decision ends a five-year legal battle that placed energy development on one side and coastal communities, environmental groups and traditional livelihoods on the other.
