BLAST FROM THE PAST | All Blacks make history with first Test series win on SA soil

1920 — Clarence Walker becomes the first South African boxer to win an Olympic medal when he takes bantamweight gold at the Antwerp Games. That kickstarted a boom for local amateur boxing, with pugilists winning 19 Olympic medals ― more than any other code by the time the country was suspended before the 1964 Games. South Africa finished the 1920 Games with 10 medals, three of them gold. That remains South Africa’s highest Games tally, matched only twice, in 1952 and 2016.

1963 — The Springboks trail a rugby series against Australia for the first time as they lose the third Test at Ellis Park 9-11. The visitors scored the only try of the game to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. Scrumhalf Nelie Smith kicked three penalties for South Africa.

1980 — Jon Ekerold sets the lap record as he wins the West German 350cc GP at Nurburgring in Germany to claim the world championship in the class. He went into the race tied with German rival Tony Mang on 47 points. Ekerold, a privateer, held the advantage on the straights, but Mang’s machine was quicker in the corners. The 30-year-old from KwaZulu-Natal clocked 8min 25.9sec for his fastest lap at 162,48kmph to beat the 8:29.5 mark set by Italian Virginio Ferrari two years earlier. Ekerold lifted the title vacated by countryman Kork Ballington who won the 250cc title on the same day. Ballington, who won the 250cc and 350cc titles in 1978 and 1979, ended second in the 250cc in 1980.

1996 — For the only time in Springbok history, South Africa lose a Test series against the All Blacks on home soil. The visitors scored three tries as they ran out 33-26 winners in the second Test at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The Boks also dotted down three times, through scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen, flank Ruben Kruger and lock Hannes Strydom, but the accuracy of New Zealand’s kickers made the difference. Eighthman Zinzan Brooke landed a drop for the visitors.

2002 — Teboho Mokoena scores twice as Bafana Bafana beat Swaziland 4-1 in Polokwane to reach their first Cosafa Cup final. Jabu Pule and Stanton Fredericks also netted.

2012 — The first ODI between South Africa and England in Cardiff is rained out after five-and-a-half overs.

2013 — Flyhalf Morne Steyn slots two late penalties to give the Springboks a 22-17 victory over Argentina in a Rugby Championship match in Mendoza. The home side won the try count 2-1, with winger Bjorn Basson dotting down for the visitors, but Steyn nailed the conversion and slotted five penalties.

2017 — Caster Semenya retains her overall Diamond League 800m title at the Zurich final, as she crosses the line in 1min 55.84sec. Luvo Manyonga kept his overall Diamond League long-jump title, winning his second straight final with a leap of 8.49m to beat countryman Ruswahl Samaai by 18cm. Khotso Mokoena was ninth with a best jump of 7.13m.

2018 — Bridgitte Hartley takes bronze in the women’s K1 1,000m at the ICF Canoe world sprint championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal. Hungarian Dóra Bodonyi won the non-Olympic event in 4min 02.892sec, ahead of British distance queen Lizzie Broughton of Britain (4:03.927) and Hartley (4:04.017).
