Khayelitsha faces urgent sewer pipeline repairs to restore sanitation services

The City of Cape Town has initiated urgent infrastructure repairs to address major sewer pipe collapses impacting sanitation services across Khayelitsha.

Zahid Badroodien, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, said: “These sewer collapses are affecting critical infrastructure that serves communities across Khayelitsha.”

Badroodien acknowledged the challenges relocations pose for impacted residents, emphasising that moving is essential to grant maintenance teams secure access to damaged areas and enable repairs to be effected.

The City urged residents to avoid construction over service points and pipeline zones.

Badroodien explained that because structures have been erected directly above utility corridors, repairs depend on ensuring unobstructed, safe passage for heavy machinery and maintenance personnel.

“We appeal to the community for continued co-operation and urge residents to refrain from building structures over sanitation service lines and access points,” he said.

“The City remains committed to working with affected residents to find solutions that will allow this essential repair work to proceed quickly and safely,” Badroodien added.
