Three children and driver killed in R59 crash near Sasolburg

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after four people, including three children died in a collision.

Police in the North West are investigating a case of culpable homicide after four people died, including three children, in a head-on collision on the R59 Road between Sasolburg and Vaalpark.

Police said the collision was between a Volkswagen Caravelle school transport vehicle and a Mercedes-Benz truck.

“It is alleged that on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at about 3.15pm, police received a complaint of culpable homicide. Upon arrival at the scene, police discovered that a Volkswagen Caravelle, which was traveling from Vaalpark towards Sasolburg, had collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz truck travelling in the direction of Vereeniging,” police said.

Four people, a 60-year-old man and three children between the ages of six and nine years, lost their lives in the collision.

“The male driver of the Volkswagen Caravelle, one girl and two boys were declared dead at the scene. Another boy was airlifted to a hospital in Alberton, while three other children who sustained serious injuries were transported to local hospitals for medical attention,” police said.

““The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation. A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Sasolburg police station,” police said.
