Spring and summer gardening: Essential tips for a healthy, productive garden

Ready to get your garden growing? From healthy soil and smart watering to natural pest control, these simple spring and summer gardening tips can help you enjoy a thriving harvest.

Spring and summer provide ideal conditions for growing a healthy and productive garden , but proper preparation and regular care are key to a successful harvest.

Improving soil with compost or well-rotted manure can boost fertility, while mulch made from dried grass or leaves helps retain moisture and keep roots cool. Soil should be loose, well-drained and rich in nutrients.

For beginners , starting seeds in a seedbed can provide a sheltered, sunny environment for germination. Keeping the soil soft and moist can benefit crops such as lettuce, carrots, beans and tomatoes.

Regular watering is particularly important during hot, dry conditions. Spinach, tomatoes and lettuce may need watering every one to two days.

Watering is best done early in the morning or after sunset to reduce evaporation and allow moisture to reach the roots. Gardeners should avoid high-pressure hoses and focus water at the base of plants rather than on the leaves.

Seedlings can be transplanted once they have developed between two and six healthy leaves and a strong root system. Moving them during cooler parts of the day can help reduce plant stress.

Regularly removing yellowing, dead or diseased leaves is also important, particularly for leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and cabbage, as it can help prevent disease from spreading.

Weeds should be removed as soon as they appear because they can compete with crops for resources. Pulling them out by hand or using a small hoe, combined with mulching between plants, can help keep weeds under control.

Natural approaches can also be used to manage pests. Plants including Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, rosemary, sage and wild garlic are described as natural snake deterrents.

For insect pests, alternatives to harsh chemicals include mild dish soap, garlic and neem oil sprays, which can help manage pests while limiting harm to beneficial insects and the environment.

Harvesting crops at the right time can help ensure good yield and flavour. Spinach can be harvested leaf by leaf, while carrots and beetroot should be gently pulled once fully grown.

Garden supports such as trellises, stakes and support sticks can also be reused for future crops. Tomatoes, strawberries, granadillas and grapes can benefit from support to prevent stem breakage and encourage healthy growth.

With careful soil preparation, appropriate watering, early weed control, natural pest management and timely harvesting, spring and summer gardening can provide a productive source of fresh produce while supporting more sustainable gardening practices.
