Mogotsi back in court as alleged escape plot report looms

Brown Mogotsi is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for the continuation of his fourth bail hearing.

Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected back at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for the continuation of his fourth bail application, with the Department of Correctional Services expected to submit a detailed report on an alleged escape plot.

However, proceedings were postponed after the court heard that correctional authorities had allegedly thwarted an attempt to help him escape while he was in custody.

Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the matter was postponed to Tuesday to allow the department to prepare and submit a detailed report on the alleged plot.

During the previous proceedings, the State told the court that Correctional Services officials had intercepted information suggesting Mogotsi was planning to escape from custody and acted swiftly to prevent it.

The prosecutor read an affidavit by the investigating officer into the court record.

The officer said he had been alerted by a Correctional Services official that Mogotsi was planning to escape.

According to the affidavit, Correctional Services authorities subsequently made arrangements to prevent the alleged escape.

The Correctional Services report is expected to form part of the evidence when Mogotsi’s application for bail based on new facts resumes.

Mogotsi, 45, faces several criminal charges stemming from an incident reported to police on November 3, 2025.

According to the State, Mogotsi told police he had been driving alone in Vosloorus when the occupants of a bakkie chased him and fired several shots at his vehicle.

The State alleges that Mogotsi fired 11 rounds at his own vehicle. Investigators recovered 11 spent cartridges at the scene.

He faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, and perjury.

The NPA said it would continue placing all relevant information before the court to ensure the matter proceeds in accordance with the law.
