Black Coffee says artists need structured support through the Art Legacy Fund

Black Coffee speaking on the vision behind the Art Legacy Gala Dinner and Fund.

Grammy Award-winning music producer and DJ Black Coffee, speaking at the Art Legacy Fund launch, opened up about the vision behind the initiative and why he got involved.

Black Coffee was the co-host of the gala dinner launch with DJ Tira and DJ Merlon, who invited him to be part of the initiative. The "Superman" hitmaker shared that after the viral video of kwaito star L’vovo Derrango , opening up about the devastating stroke that almost claimed his life.

During a radio interview, L'vovo revealed how the medical emergency left him fighting for survival, stripped him of his independence, and forced him to rebuild his life from scratch.

"I just sat there thinking, what happens next? You know how can we help without it being personal? How can we create structures that if someone has a problem like that and they need assistance with rehabilitation therapy, with a clinical psychologist, with anything that is heavy, why don't you create some funds that can come and assist?

"Not your electricity bill or your bond or money to buy a car, just like serious stuff, hence I'm talking about governance."

The Art Legacy Fund is a shared vision of Black Coffee, DJ Tira and DJ Merlon to establish a fund dedicated to supporting artists and the creative industry.

"They love the idea, and I was like, 'gents, let's just make it work and I spoke to my sister who runs the foundation; she thought it's a good idea and here we are today," shared the DJ.

Black Coffee went on to speak on having patience for fellow artists who go through stuff because he understands many group up as very troubled people, and the book "Gifted, Hunted And Haunted" by Hosea Ramphekwa helped put it into better context for him, and recommend that artists read the book.
