Tame Impala fans at Texas concert break out into ‘Freo’ chant ahead of grand final
Fremantle fever is taking over the world ahead of the AFL grand final.
The Dockers are through to just the second premiership decider in their history as they chase a maiden flag.
Standing in their way is Brisbane, who are gunning for a remarkable three-peat.
While grand final fever is taking over Australia, support for Fremantle has also reached Texas with over 15,000 fans breaking out into a “FREO, FREO, FREO” chant at the Tame Impala concert in Houston.
It’s unclear if any of the fans knew exactly what they were saying, but it didn’t matter for Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, who proudly led the crowd through the chant.
Parker is a die-hard Fremantle fan and has been the No.1 ticket holder since 2021.
He has also recorded an exclusive pump-up track for the players to use ahead of home matches at Optus Stadium.
Tame Impala have just finished the American leg of his worldwide Deadbeat tour with the two shows in Houston the final gigs before returning to Australia.
They now have a small break with their next show slated for October 9 in Brisbane before also playing in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
It’s unclear whether they was planned by design to allow Parker to attend the grand final should the Dockers make it.
Meanwhile, Fremantle’s bid to play Wharfie Time during the grand final is set to be knocked on its head, with the AFL to play the role of party poopers for the cult-hit crowd activation.
Dockers icon Shaun McManus was among the many big names to throw his weight behind calls for Wharfie Time to light up Saturday’s grand final against Brisbane, saying the MCG would “erupt” in a sea of purple.
The Dockers applied to incorporate the in-game activation before Monday’s deadline for requests, but it’s understood the AFL will say no.
Wharfie Time has previously only been used at Optus Stadium and has been a rare occurrence, with Fremantle keen to maintain a sense of mystique around it.
