Man’s twin in custody after body found in Perth backyard

WA police have arrested the twin of a man whose body was discovered in the backyard of a Perth property on Thursday.

Police, homicide detectives and forensics officers have been at the property on Nye Way in Orelia, south of Perth, since 2.20pm on Thursday.

Police said a family member called and asked them to conduct a welfare check at the home, and when officers attended, a 29-year-old man’s body was found in the backyard with “visible” injuries.

Detective Inspector Jessica Securo told reporters on Friday the body appeared to be in the backyard for a number of days, but said it was difficult to determine when he had died before forensics officers could deliver a finding.

“However, the exact time frame as to circumstances around the incident is subject to investigation.

“Another male, who is also 29 years old and the brother of the deceased, has been taken into police custody. I can confirm that there is no ongoing risk to the wider community.”

The man’s brother, understood to be his twin, is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital but is yet to be charged with any offence.

“This sort of incident has a profound impact on the family, loved ones, and friends of all those involved,” Securo said.

“Our thoughts are with them, and we ask for the privacy for them as the investigation progresses, an incident such as this is confronting, and health and welfare support services have been made available for attending police in their response and investigations.”

She did not expand on the injuries suffered by the dead man, but said forensics and detectives would likely remain at the property for several days examining the scene.
