Hawthorn Hawks superfan family score free flights, tickets to AFL match in Perth

For many AFL fans, wearing a scarf in your team’s colours means nothing more than a bit of support.

While she’s been a Hawks supporter for 15 years, her journey with the club began after she met Shaun, a passionate Hawks support from day one.

“I was an Adelaide Crows supporter, then I met my husband,” Krystal told NewsWire.

“My husband actually, when he finished uni, did some work experience at the Hawthorn Football Club, so he’s been passionate for years and years.”

“On our wedding day, he presented me with a gift and it was a Hawthorn membership,” she said.

“I really then had no choice but to stick with Hawthorn Football Club.”

Shaun didn’t stop there. The day their two sons, Lewis, 13, and Oliver, 10, were born, the Melbourne dad signed them both up as Hawthorn members.

Every match they attend, the family dons Shaun’s beloved Hawthorn scarfs as a way of keeping his spirit close as they continue creating memories as a family.

“I’ve got a big box of Hawthorn scarfs at home and merchandise and stuff from their dad,” Krystal said.

This week, the superfan family have the chance to create more memories with their favourite team by scoring free flights to Perth and accommodation from Virgin Australia.

There, they’ll have the chance to watch the qualifying final clash between the Hawks and Fremantle Dockers.

A Virgin Australia spokesman said the airline had more than 60,000 seats across key routes connecting Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth for the weekend’s AFL qualifying finals.

The spokesman said the flights gave “footy fans plenty of options to travel to the games”.

“Virgin Australia will continue to monitor demand throughout the AFL finals series and add more flights where possible to help keep fares affordable for fans,” he said.
