Queensland parliament updates: MPs return for first sitting since June

Queensland government ministers have used their opening statements this morning spruiking new detail from a long-touted bail law-tightening.

Premier David Crisafulli said the laws, to be introduced this week and passed this year, will see children charged with an “adult crime” subject to a mandatory sentence if they do so again while on bail.

Crisafulli revealed that would be done by creating an offence that would carry a minimum mandatory period in jail of 12 months – and also apply to adults.

“They will be the most significant bail reforms this state has ever seen. They will be the strongest bail reforms in the nation,” he said.
