Sparks fly after Victoria Police shred tyres of allegedly stolen Holden Commodore

A man has been arrested after an extended chase through suburban Melbourne, in which an allegedly stolen Holden Commodore was able to reach speeds of up to 200km/hr even after its tyres were shredded.

Police first spotted the ute travelling through Huntingdale Road in Chadstone at about 12.50am this morning, when they realised it was allegedly sporting false number plates.

While attempting to intercept the vehicle as it stopped on Robert St, the driver noticed and quickly sped off.

Officers waiting at the end of the street quickly deployed road spikes to prevent he car from getting away, but the driver remained unfazed and sped off.

With multiple punctured tyres, the car was able to lead officers on a chase through Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Monash, Mulgrave, Rowville and Wheelers Hill.

At some points, the car allegedly notched 200km/hr and veered onto the wrong side of the road.

Police helicopter footage of the chase shows the car zooming away with sparks streaming behind it.

“After travelling an extensive distance on three rims, the vehicle came to a stop on Nullawi Street in Springvale where the offender jumped fences and was arrested by responding officers at a property on Charlestone Street,” a police spokesman said.

The 31-year-old man who allegedly drove the vehicle remains in custody and is due to be interviewed by investigators.

A backpack containing “housebreaking implements” and an on-board diagnostics device was allegedly located nearby and seized as well.

The Commodore is believed to have been stolen in Prahran on October 5.
