Perth man’s viral post sparks debate about clothing standards at job interviews
A Perth man has sparked a heated discussion online after questioning the dress standard for current job applicants.
The man took to social media last Friday after attending a group job interview in the aged care and disability sector, expressing his shock over the attire that other applicants had arrived in.
Detailing the peculiar clothing choices, the post stated “multiple” Perth applicants had attended the interview in tracksuit pants, whilst another job hopeful wore gym leggings to the meeting.
“Have employers stopped caring about what people wear? Are they not allowed to actually consider personal appearance on discrimination grounds?” the poster queried the wider Perth community.
“Is the economy so bad that people can’t afford to spend about $30 on a pair of chinos?”
The Reddit post quickly gained attention from hundreds of workers across the State, who chimed in to the heated discussion — and it seems the original poster wasn’t alone in his observations.
“Interviewing in finance roles, a surprising number (of applicants) showed up in jeans,” one commenter revealed.
“I’ve also had people rock up to interviews in gym attire . . . first impressions count, not a great look if you want to be respected,” another Perth local said.
“It astounds me what people wear to the office these days — Casual Fridays used to just be jeans to the office, now people are wearing dirty hoodies, bike shorts, gym leggings, and even pajamas,” a corporate employee shared about their experience.
“Went for a job with a few positions available a couple of years ago, most people were dressed casual . . . the person with ripped jeans was hired,” yet another Aussie added.
