Live: Wong outraged, ambassador called in after IDF soldiers cleared over Australian's death

Penny Wong says Australia is "outraged" Israel Defense Forces personnel involved in a strike that killed humanitarian worker Zomi Frankcom have been cleared.

Australia will haul in Israel's ambassador to Canberra after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) cleared its personal of any criminal wrongdoing over a strike on a humanitarian convoy that killed an Australian woman.

Zomi Frankcom was among seven people that died in an IDF strike on the World Central Kitchen convoy in Gaza in April 2024.

Last night, the IDF cleared its personnel of any wrongdoing saying they falsely identified a Hamas fighter travelling in the convoy.

In a statement, Foreign Minister Penny Wong says Australia is "outraged" Israel has decided not to pursue criminal proceedings against personnel responsible for killing Frankom and her colleagues.

Wong says the decision falls "far short" of the accountability Australia expects, and the government is considering its "next steps".

"The Australian government learned of Israel's decision late last night, moments before it was announced, on World Humanitarian Day — which is especially insulting to Zomi's loved ones, humanitarians and all Australians," Wong says.

"Democracies seek and accept higher standards. The Australian government will not stop pressing Israel for justice for Zomi and her colleagues.

"I will call in Israel's Ambassador to Australia Hillel Newman and have directed Australia's ambassador to Israel to convey our views directly to Israel as the Australian government considers next steps."
