Anne Hathaway gives Tom Cruise’s box office flop top review despite critics savaging his new film
Anne Hathaway has thrown her support behind Tom Cruise’s latest film, awarding his divisive dark comedy Digger a five-star review after it struggled at the American box office and received a mixed response from critics.
The Oscar-winning actress, 43, published her first written review on the film-sharing platform Letterboxd, praising the new satire directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, 63.
Her endorsement came days after Digger, starring Tom, 64, as an oil tycoon attempting to save the world from a natural disaster, reportedly opened to $8 million in North America.
The review also follows the announcement Anne and Tom are due to work together on a sequel to his 1990 racing drama Days of Thunder, scheduled for 2028.
Anne wrote about Digger: “I loved this brilliant movie. It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious.”
She added: “It’s worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it. For me? 10/10.”
The endorsement marked the first time Anne had publicly reviewed a film on Letterboxd, where users can record the movies they have watched, publish their opinions and award ratings out of five stars.
Anne appears to have created her official account in April, when she began recording films including Sinners, Bugonia, Eden and One Battle After Another.
Her viewing diary subsequently included several films in which she appeared during 2026, among them The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street and Verity.
Between July and October, her activity on the platform consisted of entries for her own recent releases, making her public endorsement of Digger a departure from her previous posts.
Her profile also lists four favourite films: the 1987 romantic comedy Moonstruck, the 1934 comedy It Happened One Night, the 1975 Soviet drama Mirror and the 2017 period film Phantom Thread.
The latter stars Daniel Day-Lewis, 69, while It Happened One Night features Clark Gable, who died in 1960 aged 59.
Anne’s review quickly became one of the most popular responses to Digger on Letterboxd, where the film had an average score of 3.8 out of five from more than 2,300 users.
The film’s reception has been markedly different among professional critics, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting that 52% of nearly 300 reviewers gave it a positive assessment as of Thursday 8 October.
