Carlile Swim: New swim school planned for Currambine along with childcare centre

One of Australia’s longest-running swim schools could be about to make waves in Perth’s north, with Carlile Swim planning a new facility at Currambine Central.

A development application has been lodged with State planners for a new 709sqm swim school alongside a 112-place early learning centre and 53 new parking bays.

The two facilities are planned for a currently undeveloped site along Chesapeake Way in the Currambine District Centre, next to the Currambine Community Centre.

The swim school facility would feature a heated 233sqm indoor swimming pool, as well as a reception and waiting area, change rooms, showers, private change stalls and a viewing area for parents and carers.

Up to 120 staff and visitors would be accommodated at the swim school at any one time, which is planned to operate seven days a week from 6.30am to 8.30pm.

The neighbouring childcare centre is proposed to be operated by Tall Tree Early Learning and provide care for children aged from zero to five years.

The centre would provide 32 places for children aged up to two years, 50 places for two to three-year-olds and 30 places for children aged three to five years.

It would operate between 6.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, with capacity for up to 23 staff.

The $3 million proposal is being led by Region Group, a Sydney-based retail property group which has $5.5 billion in assets under its management.

Urban planners for Region said the project would improve the public space around the Currambine Community Centre.

“The proposed land uses will provide additional recreational and educational services to the community, and complement the existing retail, dining and entertainment offerings within the Currambine Central Shopping Centre,” planners stated in the development application.

“(Plans include) activation, upgrades and improvements to the public realm along Chesapeake Way and adjoining the Currambine Community Centre through improved landscaping and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as increased activation within the currently vacant portion of the site.”

Founded in 1955, Carlile Swim now operates 32 swim schools across Australia, including centres in Karrinyup, Claremont, Melville and Mandurah.

The swim school primarily provides swimming lessons for babies, toddlers and children.
