Melbourne High School principal quits for new role

The principal of one of Melbourne’s most prestigious state schools says he will resign in September for a role with the Department of Education.

Tony Mordini has served as Melbourne High School principal since January 2021, according to his LinkedIn page.

“To have served this remarkable school community has been both professionally rewarding and personally enriching,” Mordini said in an email to the school community.

Mordini’s new position will be a principal adviser role for the Department of Education, which he said would allow him to “contribute to public education at a system-wide level.

“It will draw upon my experience in school leadership, my work in boys’ education, my service within the judiciary, and my scholarship and research in mental health.”

Melbourne High School is a state-funded, academically selective school for boys in years nine to 12, with strong VCE results . The Age last month revealed mounting safety concerns regarding the school’s historic Gothic-style main building.

As many as half of Melbourne High’s classes could be held in demountables on the school’s hockey field while the Victorian State Building Authority works on electrical and fire-system remediation works.

Mordini is currently an Honorary Fellow at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne, and has formerly worked as an assistant principal at Mount Ridley College – one of the state’s largest metropolitan public schools.

“I wish every member of the Melbourne High School community continued success and happiness, and I look forward to watching with pride as the school continues to achieve great things in the years ahead.”
