Millions of Australians facing heavy rainfall as high pressure system moves across NSW, SA, VIC and TAS

Millions of Aussies across urban and regional parts of four different States are due to experience a wet and woolly week ahead as a high pressure system off the Tasman brings widespread rainfall.

South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania are all currently enveloped in a large cloud system which has created multiple fronts and troughs.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Dean Narramore said the high pressure system would be “driving shower activity pretty much along the entire eastern seaboard” throughout Monday and into the rest of the week, eventually clearing on Friday.

“Once we get into western NSW, much of Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, we’re going to have multiple fronts and troughs move through there, and they’re going to interact with that moisture feeding in from eastern Australia to bring widespread showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms,” Mr Narramore said.

“Through the north of Victoria into the northeast, we could see maybe closer to 30-50mm this week.”

Mr Narramore said various saturated catchments in those areas could see “renewed river level rises” later in the week.

Many parts of the country expecting rain are in agricultural areas, but Mr Narramore said it would mostly be falling in places which hadn’t been experiencing below-average rainfall.

“Things are pretty green and lush throughout these areas already, so it will be great for some and perhaps a bit too much of a good thing for others, depending on where you are.”

Sydney is expecting showers throughout the week, with average daily maximums ranging between 19C and 22C.

Melbourne is expecting showers from Tuesday through to Thursday, with daily maximums ranging between 16C and 20C.

Adelaide is expecting showers throughout Monday and Tuesday, with conditions easing from Wednesday and clearing up completely towards the end of the working week.

Tasmania can expect a delayed start to their wet weather week, with showers commencing on Wednesday and potentially lingering through to Sunday.
