Warning after footage emerges of baby toppling through his cot after it suddenly collapsed

Baby Lucas had just woken from his afternoon nap and was kicking happily when disaster struck.

The base of his cot suddenly collapsed leaving the six-month-old toppling head first onto the floor and trapped upside down.

His mother heard him screaming through the monitor and rushed in, with confronting footage showing the moment realisation dawned on her when she could not see her baby safely in the cot.

She said if it was not for the family’s high tech baby monitor, his cries for help may not have been heard.

“It doesn’t take a big fall to injure a young infant like that,” CHOICE Senior Project Officer Chris Barnes told 7NEWS.

“This footage is quite distressing. Obviously, no one wants to see anything like that happening to an infant”.

Lucas’s cot was purchased in an Australian baby boutique five years ago and is an expensive Danish-designed Leander cot.

The baby’s mother said she raised some concerns over the cot, telling them: “Every time I go to tighten the screws on the side of the cot, it feels like they are catching. They release and become loose”.

Investigations into the accident are continuing and Barnes says it serves as a good reminder for parents to check their baby equipment thoroughly.

“There’s a lot of hazards that can exist with household products like cots,” he said.

“Falls are probably the main one where kids climb up and fall out of the side of the cot, for example, or get their limbs trapped or fingers trapped.”

Lucas’s mother said she has suffered nightmares ever since the “terrifying” ordeal.
