Woman dead after car ploughs through outdoor seating at cafe

A woman has died after a car crashed into a cafe in an outer eastern Melbourne suburb, hitting her while she was dining outside.

The woman, who has not been identified, died at Martini and Co bar and cafe in Wantirna South.

A second patron was assessed by paramedics but was not taken to hospital.

The passenger and the driver of the car, which appears to be a Tesla, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Martini and Co is located in Westfield Knox. A post from the cafe on social media said it was closed until further notice.

“Please stay safe and we will keep you updated when we can reopen,” it said.

From pictures at the scene, it appears that the car travelled a short distance down a one-way street, mounted the curb at a zebra crossing and hit the woman, who was seated behind a wooden barrier.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances of the crash, however Victoria Police said they did not believe the incident was intentional.
