Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon named as complainant in Mick Mundine sexual assault case
A Sydney councillor has broken her silence after publicly identifying herself as the complainant in a historical child sexual assault case against prominent Aboriginal leader Mick Mundine.
City of Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon confirmed on Friday she was the woman at the centre of allegations against the 79-year-old Aboriginal Housing Company boss, who was arrested on Thursday.
Mr Mundine has been charged with assault – committing an act of indecency, and sexual assault of a person under 16 years of age.
The allegations relate to an incident involving a then-15-year-old girl in Redfern, in Sydney’s inner south, in June 1986.
In a statement published to Instagram, Ms Weldon said she had decided to speak publicly after four decades.
“I have carried this for 40 years. It’s time to no longer carry it,” she said.
Ms Weldon said she would not make further comments while the matter was before the courts and asked that her family’s privacy be respected.
Her statement came a day after sex crimes squad detectives arrested Mr Mundine in Redfern about 7am on Thursday.
NSW Police said Strike Force Millersburg was established in December 2025 to investigate alleged historical sexual assaults involving a 15-year-old girl in June 1986.
Mr Mundine was taken to Newtown Police Station for questioning following what police described as extensive inquiries.
Mr Mundine’s lawyer Fahim Aryasaid said his client would fight the charges.
Mr Mundine is expected to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, October 14.
The prominent Indigenous leader has served as chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company for decades and played a central role in the redevelopment of Redfern’s historic The Block.
