City of Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon has come forward as the complainant at the centre of prominent Indigenous elder Mick Mundine's child sexual assault charges.
Mr Mundine was arrested on Thursday by the Sex Crimes Squad over the historical allegation involving a 15-year-old girl, which is alleged to have taken place in Redfern in 1986.
The Aboriginal Housing Company chief executive, 79, was charged with sexual assault, and sexual assault of a person under the age of 16.
Ms Weldon made the announcement in a social media post on Friday, writing that it was "never too late to speak up".
"I have carried this for 40 years. It is time to no longer carry it," she said.
"I came forward for the children who are here now and to break the culture of silence that allows abuse to continue.
Elected in 2021, Cr Weldon is the first Aboriginal councillor to sit on the City of Sydney council.
Mr Mundine was granted bail by police to front the Downing Centre Local Court next week.
