Vanguard Australia’s ‘Super September’ starts now

Vanguard Australia’s ‘Super September’ starts now

Australians are increasingly worried about how they’ll be able to finance their retirement — with new research from Vanguard Australia identifying a widening confidence gap.

In response, the company has kicked off Super September , a nationwide four-week campaign designed to tackle the loss of confidence with the campaign built directly off Vanguard’s How Australia Retires report , an annual survey of thousands of people.

Take the Vanguard SmartRetire quiz at vanguard.com.au/smartretire to discover the building blocks of a more confident retirement.

The main takeaway driving this year’s push: people with low retirement confidence who can take five specific actions are three times more likely to feel confident about their future.

Vanguard has taken that data and turned it into a structured, week-by-week program, asking members to commit just 10 minutes a week throughout September.

Rather than a single awareness campaign or product push, Vanguard has broken its retirement research into a practical, staged challenge, aimed squarely at the large number of Australians who say they feel unprepared but don’t know where to start.

Super September runs across four weeks, each built around one of the five actions Vanguard’s research links to higher retirement confidence.

Week 1: Check in : Members are directed to Vanguard’s SmartRetire Quiz, a three-minute tool that identifies where they stand today and flags personalised “confidence building blocks.”

Week 2: Make a plan . Vanguard is highlighting a striking figure from its research: 75 per cent of Australians with a detailed retirement plan report high retirement confidence, compared to those with no plan at all. The campaign points members to Vanguard’s Retirement Lifestyle tools and a downloadable planning guide.

Week 3: Grow your knowledge . Vanguard is pushing members toward its “Learn with us” hub, with three pieces flagged as starting points: a guide to reading a super statement, a breakdown of 10 common super myths, and an explainer on how the Age Pension fits into retirement income.

Week 4: Take action . The final week asks members to actually do something: check their balance, consider salary sacrifice contributions, confirm their beneficiary nomination, or review whether their investment option still matches their goals.

The timing lines up with what Vanguard describes as a persistent gap between how much Australians have saved and how confident they feel about it.

The fund’s research suggests that gap isn’t primarily about balance size. It’s about engagement.

Members who check in regularly, understand the basics and have even a loose plan report materially higher confidence than those with larger balances but no plan at all.
