East Fremantle adopts new community events schedule, several smaller events instead of George St Festival

East Fremantle will now host multiple smaller community events rather than the traditional George Street Festival due to rising costs.

The town unanimously adopted a new events strategy covering the next five years. It introduced eight new events and attractions, as well as some familiar favourites.

The festival - which has activated the historic George Street precinct with local businesses, music, food and activities since the 1990s - was paused by the town last year due to rising costs and inconsistent sponsorships.

Council resolved to “consider other uses for the funds” in March 2025, and held community consultations to build the new strategy.

George Street will instead host four smaller events throughout the year, including a Spring Buzz artist workshop, neighbourhood picnic, Autumn Hues artist workshop and an open-door business discovery trail.
