Blue Jays’ bats break out behind Cease to gain ground in wild-card chase

TORONTO – Give or take a few details, this is exactly how the Toronto Blue Jays would have scripted Friday’s game.

A dominant start from their ace. Production from the top of the order, including three home runs. Lockdown work from the bullpen. Win. Gain some ground in the standings. Try and do it again tomorrow.

The resulting 8-1 win over the visiting Seattle Mariners gives the Blue Jays a 66-70 record and allows them to gain a game on the Cleveland Guardians, who now have a 2.5-game edge over Toronto in the race for the third and final American League wild-card spot.

At the centre of it all was Dylan Cease , who strengthened his case for the AL Cy Young Award with six innings of one-run ball.

The only run Cease surrendered came in the first inning when Dominic Canzone turned on a middle-middle fastball.

Otherwise, Cease was his usual dominant self, walking just one while striking out eight. It marked the 19th consecutive start in which Cease has recorded seven or more strikeouts – a streak that now spans four full months.

Through 25 starts, Cease has an AL-best 217 strikeouts with a 2.33 ERA. However, his main competitor in the Cy Young race, Cam Schlittler of the Yankees, also pitched well Friday, lowering his ERA to 2.09 with 5.2 scoreless innings against the Red Sox.

Regardless, the Blue Jays have more important collective goals in play. In fact, it’s with those goals in mind that Cease was removed after just 92 pitches. The team wants Cease fresh for the upcoming Guardians series, likely as soon as Wednesday. Removing him relatively early should help him stay fresh for that next turn.

But as impressive as Cease was, the offence was just as good – not something that we’ve often been able to say about the 2026 Blue Jays. Nathan Lukes , George Springer and Kazuma Okamoto all homered while Brett Bateman had another two-hit game from the leadoff spot.

And while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is still searching for that first Rogers Centre home run of 2026, he did drive in a run at home for the first time this month with a first-inning RBI double down the left-field line. He’d later line out on a ball hit 105.1 m.p.h. and make good contact on a fly ball to right.

Those could be seen as positives for Guerrero Jr., yet trying to predict what’s next for him seems daunting at this point. He’s too talented a player to have just seven home runs heading into September and he’s actively searching for answers in the batting cage, but those efforts have yet to translate on the field.

The spotlight’s shone directly on him for much of 2026, and that’s fair enough considering his ability and contract. But rarely have his teammates bailed him out by doing their own slugging. On Friday, they did just that.

Not only did the homers from Lukes, Springer and Okamoto support a strong effort from Cease and take the spotlight away from Guerrero Jr., they allowed the Blue Jays to rest some key relievers.

Mason Fluharty, Paul Sewald and CJ Van Eyk closed out the win for the Blue Jays, preserving Louis Varland and Tyler Rogers for extended use Saturday and Sunday if needed.
