American League wild-card roundup: Blue Jays fall 1.5 games back of Rangers

The out-of-town scoreboard wasn't overly kind to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

After the Blue Jays lost to the New York Yankees, the Cleveland Guardians and Texas Rangers both recorded wins to drop Toronto further back in the American League wild-card race.

The Rangers' 2-1 extra-inning win over the Los Angeles Angels put Toronto 1.5 games behind Texas for the final wild-card spot.

Cleveland also overtook Toronto in the tight race with a blowout win over the Colorado Rockies.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Wyatt Langford had a tying RBI double in the 10th inning, then scored the winning run on third baseman Denzer Guzman's throwing error as the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Friday night.

Guzman had opened the top of the 10th with an RBI double to put the Angels ahead in the eighth MLB game this season that was scoreless going into extra innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th after an intentional walk, Guzman made a nice stop on a grounder by Ezequiel Duran. But his wide throw to second base trying to get an inning-ending forceout allowed Langford to race home.

Tyler Alexander (4-2) pitched the 10th and struck out two for the win.

Ben Joyce (0-1) gave up two hits and two runs, neither earned, in 2/3 of an inning.

NEW YORK — Rookie Spencer Jones hit a towering two-run homer in the second inning that was upheld on replay, and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on Friday night for their fifth straight victory.

New York starter Cam Schlittler (11-6) held the Blue Jays to one run and six hits in six innings. The tall right-hander allowed one earned run or fewer for the major league-leading 19th time and got his first win since July 24.

After Trent Grisham opened the second with a walk, Jones lifted Spencer Arrighetti’s 2-1 curveball to right field. The ball stayed fair, passed the foul pole before landing about halfway up the second deck.

Jones watched the flight of the ball before starting his home run trot. As he was about halfway through, Toronto manager John Schneider called for a review and the home run stood following a brief delay.
