Alexander Zverev downs Ben Shelton to win US Open

After years spent searching for a Grand Slam title, Alexander Zverev now has two to his name.

Zverev took down Ben Shelton in four sets (6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2) in the final of the U.S. Open on Sunday, building on a career year that had already seen him take home the French Open.

The German — who came in as the tournament's No. 1 seed with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner out with an injury — was clinical on serve, holding steady to win all but one service game to secure the win.

Before dropping the final game in the third set — his lone hiccup on the day — his unbroken streak of 66 games against Shelton dated all the way back to 2024, when the two first faced off at the Cincinnati Open.

Zverev connected on 70 per cent of his first serves and won a staggering 84 per cent of those points.

That dominance on serve, combined with an early break on Shelton in the first game of the match and the first game of the decisive fourth set, gave Zverev the upper hand.

After winning that opener in the fourth set, bouncing back from a tight third-set loss, Zverev held serve the rest of the way and broke Shelton one more time for good measure in the seventh game to secure the win and his second Grand Slam title.
