To Inform Your Vote, a Guide to Tyee Civic Coverage

This summer, the Tyee began covering what was sure to be a fractured and fascinating civic election in Vancouver. Starting in July, we interviewed every major mayoral candidate, held a mayoral debate event and provided deep dives into key election topics such as crime and public safety , housing and parks and recreation .

When we surveyed readers about what they wanted to see in our election reporting, we received a torrent of ideas and topics. One prominent theme was a call for more coverage from outside Vancouver — readers from around the province wrote in with requests to cover their communities and treat issues such as AI, racism and homelessness as broad issues affecting many areas.

We heard you. And drew up a battle plan. Senior editor Tyler Olsen (who lives in Lillooet) steered coverage of local politics across B.C. while senior editor Jen St. Denis, working with lead reporter Katie Hyslop, headed up coverage of Vancouver’s contests. When the snap provincial election was called, contributions from Tyee readers allowed us to hire skilled freelancers as reinforcements. The results speak for themselves. You can find our election-related stories below, and we hope they help inform your voting decisions. We hope you find it useful and, as always, encourage you to share our coverage as widely as possible.

Come back tomorrow evening, when The Tyee will be covering the results in Vancouver and outcomes in electoral hot spots across the rest of the province, including Kamloops, Surrey, Quesnel, Powell River and Penticton.

We will also continue to pore over your survey suggestions, grateful for the wealth of journalism tips you provided. You’re right. B.C. is big but crowded with important stories to report. Stay tuned for more in the months ahead.
