Libya asks ICC to support probe into attacks on civilian facilities

Libya has officially requested assistance from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate attacks on critical civilian facilities in the capital, Tripoli, and the western city of Zawiya, as stated by the Libyan Presidential Council late Saturday.

This request aims to secure technical, legal, and judicial support for the ongoing investigations conducted by Libyan authorities.

The goal is to share the investigative workload, establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents, and identify those responsible.

Preliminary investigations by relevant Libyan institutions suggest that these attacks are part of a broader strategy targeting civilian infrastructure, including fuel storage facilities and power stations, thereby endangering the lives of civilians.

The council reported that security agencies and the National Safety Authority have managed to contain some attacks and prevent others from occurring.

Given the nature and seriousness of these incidents, they may constitute crimes against humanity or genocide, according to a legal assessment by Libyan authorities.

Earlier this month, Libya's internationally recognized Government of National Unity announced the dismantling of an organized sabotage cell and the arrest of five Libyan and foreign individuals suspected of involvement in drone attacks on oil and electricity facilities in Tripoli and Zawiya.

The government indicated that investigations are ongoing to identify additional individuals involved and the parties responsible for planning, financing, or supporting these operations.
