Chinese doubles hopes end in Cincinnati Open quarterfinals
Chinese players Zhang Shuai, Jiang Xinyu and Guo Hanyu saw their women's doubles campaigns come to an end in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open on Thursday.
Zhang and Jiang were edged by American duo Iva Jovic and Caty McNally 7-6(8), 3-6, 10-6 in a closely contested three-set encounter.
Neither pair was able to establish a decisive advantage in the opening set, which went to a tiebreak.
Zhang and Jiang had opportunities to take the lead but Jovic and McNally eventually prevailed 10-8 in the tiebreak to move one set ahead.
The Chinese duo responded in the second set.
Zhang and Jiang found the breakthrough they needed and maintained their advantage to take it 6-3, sending the contest into another tiebreak.
Jovic and McNally then regained control in the decider.
The Americans built an early advantage and held off all attempts to close the gap, winning the extra game 10-6 to secure a place in the semifinals.
They will next face Czech pair Marie Bouzkova and Linda Noskova for a place in the final.
Guo and France's Kristina Mladenovic were also eliminated after falling to Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 6-4.
Hsieh and Ostapenko took the opening set 6-3 before maintaining their advantage in a tighter second.
Guo and Mladenovic were unable to force a deciding tiebreak and their opponents closed out the contest 6-4.
The Cincinnati defeat brought an end to Guo and Mladenovic's winning run since they won the Wimbledon women's doubles title in July.
