The City Crime Branch (CCB-Coimbatore) on Saturday arrested a doctor for allegedly embezzling about 900 sovereigns of jewellery worth several crore of rupees from his father-in-law. The accused was identified as M. Vignesh (30), a resident of Jothipuram near Periyanaickenpalayam.
The CCB booked Vignesh, his mother M. Vasuki and his sister M. Jeevitha on July 3 this year for criminal breach of trust and two other offences, based on a complaint lodged by S. Shanmugapandian (67), a real estate businessman of Ganapathi Maanagar.
According to the First Information Report, Vignesh and Mr. Shanmugapandian’s second daughter, also a doctor, got married in 2024. The businessman claimed that he had entrusted the keys of a locker and bureau at his residence, in which 1,000 sovereigns of jewellery were kept, to Vignesh.
The complainant alleged that jewellery went missing from the bureau, and the accused returned only 100 sovereigns in June this year when he demanded the gold back. The complainant also alleged that the accused intimidated him for demanding the jewellery.
