The long-pending elections for recognised union of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) began on Friday (October 9, 2026) with thousands of workers voting, and others expected to cast their vote across the State. The results of the election are scheduled to be announced on October 17.

A total of 34,899 workers are on the electoral roll, of which 13,797 are from the Greater Hyderabad Zone. These include 5,109 drivers, 6,509 conductors, 1,476 garage staff, and 703 classified as others.

The last time polls for union recognition were held on July 19, 2016 with the recognition being accorded to the Telangana Mazdoor Union.

In the run up to the elections, the Returning Officer, who is the Joint Commissioner of Labour Hyderabad, had issued the first notice to as many as 46 trade unions, instructing them to submit relevant records.

According to union leaders, while polling was slow in the morning, the numbers are expected to see an uptick in the afternoon. Union leaders fanned across the over 100 polling stations in the State. Various unions have the support of different political parties.

In the run up to these elections, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar had announced fitment, and reiterated the number of compassionate appointments made for TGSRTC workers’ family members. He also touched upon the reinstatement of workers who were dismissed from service.

Union leaders maintained that their demands will continue to remain the same , including merger of the transport behemoth with the government.
