Doctor today, lawyer tomorrow: How do you save for your child’s education when they keep changing dreams?

Planning a child's education fund has become genuinely tricky in 2026. Career paths themselves keep shifting, sometimes several times before adulthood.

One parent likened this planning to ice skating, requiring constant balance adjustments. His own son moved from astronaut dreams to medicine, then law.

Career experts now describe an overwhelming landscape of choices available today. There are reportedly 20 career clusters spanning over 3,000 distinct occupations.

Younger generations increasingly gravitate toward creative fields rather than traditional tracks. This includes animation, UI/UX design and various digital media careers .

"When you do not know what job, career, college, or stream it will be, the only certainty is that you need money," Santosh Joseph, founder of Germinate Investment Services, told Mint Money.

Given this unpredictability, financial advisers are rethinking how families should plan ahead. Rather than committing everything toward one rigid course fund, layering makes more sense. This means building flexibility directly into the investment structure from the start.

One suggested approach breaks planning into three distinct components. First comes a core fund that realistically covers non-negotiable baseline education costs. The second one sits as a contingency buffer, roughly 15-20% extra. This absorbs unexpected surges or course extensions along the way.

Finally, there's a choice layer, deliberately kept flexible and unlabelled. This portion specifically funds pivots, gap years or unexpected certifications later.

Parents keep options open rather than earmarking money for one fixed goal. As one adviser put it, you're essentially planning somewhat blindly regardless.

"Literally, you're running a bit blind into the future. All you can do is create a certain fund for your kid and don't label it as anything; just say that this is something for my child to be used for whatever goal emerges," Priya Sunder, co-founder and director at PeakAlpha Investments, told Mint Money.

Annual reviews matter considerably, too. It ensures plans stay realistically achievable throughout. Advisers stress that funding late career changes shouldn't threaten parents' own retirement. Scholarships or loans could bridge gaps if the flexible fund proves insufficient.

Investment vehicles themselves also require rethinking under this new approach. Traditional options like rigid endowment policies or physical gold feel increasingly inadequate.

Instead, systematic investing through flexi-cap or multi-cap mutual funds offers better adaptability. These spread risk across market segments while still beating inflation over time.

Communication within families plays an equally-crucial role throughout this process. As children reach their mid-teens, involving them directly becomes genuinely valuable.
