The mushrooming of roadside eateries at prominent locations in Madurai is largely unchecked, with many operating in unhygienic conditions that could endanger public health. The areas around MGR Bus Stand at Mattuthavani, Periyar and Arappalayam bus stands, and the Railway Station require immediate attention.

Several interior and peripheral locations are also turning into informal street-food zones. Besides unhygienic food preparation, the indiscriminate dumping of food waste worsens sanitation and environmental conditions.

The health and food safety authorities should introduce a proper regulatory mechanism and conduct regular inspections to ensure hygienic conditions at these eateries.
