Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Saturday (October 17, 2026) visited the Kottayam railway station to assess the facilities being put in place for the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, amid expectations of a rise in the number of pilgrims this year.
Talking to the media, Mr. Gopi said the visit was undertaken at the direction of the Union Railway Minister to review the infrastructure needed to handle the anticipated rush. The Railways had already begun work to improve facilities ahead of the season and more stations would be inspected as part of the exercise, he said.
According to him, the Railways was also considering operating additional special trains during the pilgrimage season. Facilities at stations, including Chengannur, would be improved to accommodate the increased passenger traffic, Mr. Gopi added.
On the proposed Angamaly-Sabarimala railway line, Mr. Gopi said suitable rail routes would be developed to facilitate pilgrims travelling to the hill temple. He also expressed confidence that Keralam would get an AIIMS and remarked that everyone knew who did not want the project to come to the State.
