The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, in its pre-sowing forecast for groundnut, anticipates the prices of good quality crop to be around ₹65-₹70 per kg at the time of harvest.
Based on analyses of groundnut prices in Tindivanam and Sevur regulated markets for the past 25 years and current market survey, the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS), TNAU, foresees decline in arrival due to recent monsoon fluctuations.
One of the major producers of groundnut in India with an area of 3.15 lakh hectares and production of 7.69 lakh tonnes with a productivity of 2439 kg/ha during the year 2024-25, Tamil Nadu’s output accrues from Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Villupuram, Salem, Cuddalore, and Ariyalur districts, a press release from TNAU said.
In Tamil Nadu, groundnut is mainly used for oil extraction, and its by-product is used as high protein feed for livestock.
The crop is sown between June and August in most districts, the release said.
