Mild tension prevailed during a protest organised by local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cadres at Chintakunta canal near Karimnagar on Monday (September 21, 2026), demanding the release of water into the canals ahead of the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony scheduled for Wednesday.

Police detained several protesters after they staged a dharna under the banner of ‘Chalo Chintakunta’ on the Karimnagar-Vemulawada main road while pressing for the release of water.

Addressing the protest, BJP local leaders demanded that the Telangana government immediately order the release of water from the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) into Chintakunta and other canals to facilitate the smooth conduct of the Ganesh idol immersion festivities.

The leaders said the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (MCK) had made elaborate arrangements for the Ganesh idol immersions , but the lack of water in tanks and other nearly dry water bodies could pose difficulties. The protesters alleged that police resorted to lathi-charge during the dharna. Several corporators of the MCK and others took part in the protest.
