The engine of a goods train, coming from Chennai port, derailed inside the railway yard at Melpakkam village near Arakkonam railway station in Ranipet on Saturday.

Railway officials said the goods train, with 38 wagons, was headed towards a neighbourhood in Bengaluru with a consignment of consumer cars. The wheels of the engine disengaged from the track, derailing the train, and damaging the tracks.

A team of higher officials and engineering crew reached the spot. Restoration work is in progress. Railway officials said that despite the derailment of the train, train services between Arakkonam and Katpadi were not affected.
