City hospital performs 20-hour surgery to remove rare mesenteric tumour in 29-year-old

A 29-year-old IT professional underwent a 20-hour marathon surgery at Kumaran Hospitals, Kilpauk, for the removal of a rare, high-grade malignant tumour measuring 20×20×18 cm.

The tumour had developed at the root of the mesentery, the tissue supporting the intestines, and was closely associated with two of the three major blood vessels in the region, making its removal highly complex. The surgical team performed extensive tumour excision, along with a total pancreaticoduodenectomy and splenectomy, to achieve complete removal.

The patient, who had Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a hereditary condition associated with an increased risk of certain tumours, was discharged 10 days after the procedure and is expected to resume normal activities soon.

The surgery was led by Prof. Rela’s team and P. Kapil Nagaraj, gastrointestinal surgeon, with support from a multidisciplinary team including anaesthesia, vascular and liver transplant specialists, critical care, infectious disease, radiology and intensive care teams. Advanced surgical technology and monitoring systems were used throughout the prolonged procedure.
