European Parliament is in civilizational abyss, says Georgian parliament speaker
TBILISI, October 9. /TASS/. The European Parliament has already descended into a "civilizational abyss" by adopting yet another resolution critical of Georgia, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said.
"We speak of the European Union being dragged into a civilizational abyss, whereas the European Parliament is already there and is addressing us from that position. Before its statements can be considered worthy of attention, it must first climb out of that abyss. Only then will its words carry weight," Papuashvili told reporters, commenting on the resolution.
On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the Georgian authorities’ plans to ban opposition parties. It also called for the release of imprisoned opposition figures, including former President Mikhail Saakashvili, and urged the EU to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder and honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party; Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze; Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili; and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
