Today (Aug.
12), millions of people across Greenland, Iceland and Spain will witness a total solar eclipse as the moon completely covers the sun, turning day into night, albeit briefly.
It's Europe's first total solar eclipse since 1999, and with a maximum of 2 minutes, 18 seconds of totality, it will be worth the wait … weather permitting! Even if you're not inside the path of totality, there's still plenty to see.
A dramatic partial solar eclipse will be visible across much of Europe, offering millions more the chance to watch the moon take a 'bite' out of the sun.
More than 90% of the sun will be covered for major cities such as London, Paris and Dublin.
Where will the eclipse be visible? Today's eclipse will unfold over roughly 96 minutes as the moon's shadow races across Greenland, Iceland and Spain.
Totality begins in Greenland in the late afternoon before reaching Spain in the evening, where skywatchers will witness the rare spectacle of a low-horizon sunset eclipse.
