The Atlantic Publishes List of “50 Unforgettable Love Stories”

Today The Atlantic launches “ 50 Unforgettable Love Stories ,” a new editorial project that highlights stories of romantic love.

The list includes works published across more than four centuries—from its earliest selection, Astrophil and Stella by Philip Sidney, published in 1591, to its most recent, The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden, published in 2024.

The list below is an effort to name the love stories—novels, of course, but also poetry, plays, and short stories—that are the most enduring.

To arrive at 50 titles, The Atlantic ’s Books team asked a jury of scholars, librarians, critics, and authors across genres, as well as many colleagues, to name their favorite titles that were originally written in English.

As the introduction to the list says: “We thought of our own personal touchstones, deliberated over the choices, and emerged with a group of standouts: 50 titles you won’t soon forget.” The editors write that across centuries, “the love story, with all of its attendant joys and sorrows, was an organizing principle of life—and of literature … Today, fictional love is associated with the romance genre and its proliferating subcategories, and you’ll find examples of those books here, but we aimed to think more expansively about its literary manifestations.

The love story belongs as much to Arundhati Roy as to Jane Austen; its pulse beats as strongly in the knotty poetry of Anne Carson as it does in the steamy historicals of Beverly Jenkins.

It is by turns ecstatic, tragic, cerebral, enthralling, and enlightening.

For so many of us, it’s a reason to live and to read.” “ 50 Unforgettable Love Stories ” is part of The Atlantic ’s robust Books section , devoted to essays, criticism, reporting, original fiction, poetry, and book recommendations, as well as The Atlantic ’s weekly Books Briefing newsletter.

This follows The Atlantic ’s earlier books projects “ 65 Essential Children’s Books ,” released in October 2025, “ The Best American Poetry of the 21st Century (So Far) ,” published in March 2025, and “ The Great American Novels ,” released in 2024.
