MAGA Rep Publicly Humiliated as Crowd Laughs in His Face
Aaron Schwartz / REUTERS A MAGA congressman was publicly humiliated when his Democratic challenger turned one of his signature re-election campaign boasts against him.
Rep.
Mike Lawler , a New York Republican who has touted his work on the state and local property tax deduction, or SALT cap, had a tense exchange with Democrat Cait Conley at a candidate forum on Thursday.
The SALT cap, which limits federal deductions for state and local taxes, became a flashpoint in Trump’s tax-and-spending bill.
Lawler cast a decisive vote for the package, but critics say its deep healthcare cuts hurt his voters.
Lawler himself seemed visibly triggered when called out over the SALT cap.
A clip of the confrontation shared by the X account TrumpsTaxes racked up more than 130,000 views.
The footage showed Lawler rising from his seat before the forum moderator told him to sit down and “calm down.” During the exchange, Lawler said Hudson Valley residents had received a $4,000 tax refund “in your pocket this past April.” “And that would have also happened if you did nothing,” Conley immediately shot back.
“No it wouldn’t have,” Lawler fumed, drawing laughter from the crowd.
“Oh wow,” the account piled on.
“ Mike Lawler got so rattled when Cait Conley accurately called him out on his SALT deduction lie that he tried to get up and leave before being told by the forum moderator to sit down and calm down.
Oh, and the crowd laughed at him, too.” Conley, who is seeking to unseat the two-term Republican in New York’s 17th Congressional District, also attacked him on X on Thursday.
“Trump created the SALT deduction cap in 2017 to punish New York,” she wrote.
“It was set to expire ENTIRELY at the end of 2025, but Mike Lawler voted to make it a permanent tax on working families to fund tax breaks for billionaires.” She added that the cap would return to $10,000 in 2030, “when Mike is running for his next office.” “Trying to spin this as a win is an insult to the Hudson Valley,” she wrote.
