SANDF deployed in Durban CBD after voilent protests

Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been deployed in the Durban CBD.

They will monitor the situation following the disruptive and violent protests yesterday.

Police were over-stretched yesterday as angry protesters were spread across the city.

They were demanding the repatriation of undocumented foreign nationals and the halting of asylum applications.

Yesterday, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli requested the deployment of the army as the police found themselves outnumbered.

19 people have been arrested following the protests.

Shops and various businesses were destroyed.

Members of the SANDF are patrolling the city streets together with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
