Cosatu confident National Congress will be successful

Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says it expects the 15th National Congress at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park to run smoothly.

The congress which will, among other priorities, elect a new leadership-will sit between October 12 to 15 following its collapse last month.

The initial gathering adjourned prematurely in September at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand due to credentials disputes and the failure to form a quorum.

The SABC News has reliably learnt that recent court attempts by aggrieved unions to interdict the this week’s congress were dismissed on Friday for a lack of urgency.

Cosatu Parliamentary Coordinator Matthew Parks says, “We expect congress to take place and we expect it to be successful.

Yes there was a court process on Friday, the court set that aside and the congress is set to go.” “We need to move beyond the theatrics of congress, it happens every four years and our issue here is to get report from Cosatu, and affiliate unions on the work done in the past four years of defending workers jobs and improving lives of working class issues.” Parks adds, “We will have to elect a new leadership because you we are a constitutional democracy and to look at challenges going forward what’s the programme of action.” VIDEO | Interview with Parks on Cosatu’s National Conference:
