State requests Carrim be held in custody pending bail probe
The state has requested that North West businessman Suliman Carrim be remanded in custody, stating that bail investigations have not been completed.
Carrim has been appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court following his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport last night.
He was arrested while he was allegedly on his way to a religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia via Dubai.
Carrim is charged with contravening the Commissions Act for failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission despite being directed to do so.
The state told the court that verification of Carrim’s residential address was still outstanding and requested a remand.
“From the state side this instance, the bail investigations are still incomplete.
And in terms of the provisions of Section 50 sub section 6 paragraph D of the Criminal Procedure Act wherein the state is still outstanding the address confirmation of the accused person, also we would like to place it on record your worship that the state had obtained the profile of the accused person.
However, such an attainment of the profile was done two months back when the matter was then reported to the South African Police Service.” Court proceedings below:
