Godongwana announces R10 billion in fuel-levy relief

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has proposed a R10 billion fuel-levy relief allocation as part of the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) .

Godongwana says the financing is intended to help ease cost of living pressures without compromising the sustainability of the budget.

“The fuel levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol from 4 November 2026 up until to 1 December 2026,” says Godongwana.

He conveyed to Parliament that from then on, the relief will continue at a lower amount until 5 January 2027, “The diesel levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre the petrol levy by R1 per litre.” According to Treasury, the R10 billion arises out of revenue overruns from the 2025/26 fiscal year appropriated to Central Energy Fund (CEF).

However, Treasury says CEF will surrender the revenue back to the National Revenue Fund (NRF) to fuel levy relief.

“To fund this support, the R10 billion that was transferred to the Central Energy Fund will be returned to the National Revenue Fund to finance this relief,” added Godongwana.
