Eskom’s financial turnaround a step in the right direction

SABC News Business ·

Eskom says its financial turnaround has created a solid foundation for broader economic reform and growth for the country, as the power utility adapts to a changing electricity market.

Eskom CEO Dan Marokane was speaking after the entity presented a positive financial outlook to Parliament’s Electricity and Energy Portfolio Committee.

Eskom recorded a R30,3 billion profit for the year ending March 2026, while acknowledging that there is still room to improve its operational and financial performance .

“Operationally and financially, the signs that the recovery has moved to be structural are there, and the data speaks for itself.

So, we have a very solid base upon which we can now be able to drive the reform for the country and the growth that is required.

And at the same time, we have to adapt the business model for Eskom to play an important role still going forward, but that is different from where we come from.

As the ministers explained, the undermining of a monopoly itself by nature means that the terrain changes, but Eskom still has a relevant role to play that needs to adapt to the changing electricity market sector,” says Marokane.
