Power supply now exceeds demand: Ramokgopa

Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says electricity supply is now outstripping demand.

Ramokgopa’s intervention that increased generation from both private producers and Eskom, has changed the supply and demand balance.

The minister has announced plans to procure 4,600 megawatts of battery storage and 5,000 megawatts of gas-to-power, as part of the first Section 34 Determination under the Integrated Resource Plan 2025.

“We are sitting with surplus electricity on the system.

And that itself represents a major risk to the system.

So, essentially we are losing electricity.

We are throwing electricity away, and that’s money.

On average, the system has about access capacity, especially during the day, of more than 4,000 megawatts,” says Ramokgopa.
