The body of 19-year-old Jonathan Bradfield was recovered on Tuesday, five days after he disappeared in the surf at Mtunzini Main Beach in KwaZulu-Natal.

His drowning occurred during a weekend of multiple coastal emergencies.

"At 1.10pm on Thursday, October 1, NSRI Richards Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning at Mtunzini Main Beach," National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach said.

Bradfield, who was visiting the area, had been swimming with his girlfriend when ocean conditions turned, eventually sweeping him out into the surf zone.

"It appears that the teenager was swimming with his girlfriend when she exited the water she noticed he was in difficulty, appearing to be caught in rip currents, and disappearing in the surf zone," Rautenbach said.

Before authorities arrived, local community members, friends, family, and boaters began a frantic search using a private aerial drone, a rigid-hull inflatable boat, and a jet ski.

"The Empangeni Search and Rescue Unit recovered Bradfield’s body approximately 2km south of where he had been swimming," Police Captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed.

To his family, he was "Jona", and to his school community, he was known as "Johny" or "Winter".

He attended Dordrecht High School during his early school years before moving to Hoër Landbouskool Marlow in Cradock, where he was completing his matric year.

In a moving tribute published with family photographs, his aunt and godmother, Sharon Bradfield, called him "my precious nephew and Godchild" .

Jaco Marais remembered his "good manners, a firm handshake and an unwavering strong faith", while Cathy Kirchner Saayman mourned the loss of a familiar, comforting presence .

At Hoër Landbouskool Marlow, the school paid tribute to its 2026 matric pupil, remembering him as a friend, classmate, and cherished "Wolram" who was deeply loved by the staff .

The school described him as a young man with deep faith and a beautiful heart.
